So you are considering getting a new companion! That is great! Many people that we have visited with are first time puppy owners and have a lot of questions about what they will need for their new companion. We are hoping some of these tips will help you feel comfortable about bringing your new baby home when you make that decision and find your perfect puppy.
Puppies are a lot like real babies – everything is new to them so please be patient. They need a lot of nurturing and care; especially in those first few weeks after arriving in their new home. All of our babies are handled many times a day and will aready know what it is to be cuddled and played with. They are climate controlled between 75 and 80 degrees from the time they are born. In general, Bulldogs do not tolerate extreme temperatures very well. A good rule to follow is if you are uncomfortable, so is your companion. We do recommend that you keep your puppy in a very comfortable environment - especially while they are adjusting to a new home.
Fresh water and regular feedings are a must. Stainless dishes are great but any type of bowls that are durable will be just fine. Our puppies have dry food in front of them all of the time. We know that it is hard to potty train if the puppies can eat whenever they want but please offer them food 3 to 4 times a day and give them time to eat what they want. They are growing very fast and require a lot of nurishment. Also make sure you feed a good puppy food. We will send you a small amount of food with your puppy and recommend that you don’t change food right away. If you decide you want to change brands, do that gradually so your puppy has time to adjust. There are a lot of choices out there and your new little one deserves the best.
We strongly recommend that your puppy have their own crate. The wire crates are great because they allow a lot of air flow and your new companion can see everything that is going on around them. Make sure your puppy has plenty of room to get around and play. The crate is wonderful for allowing your puppy to have their own space – a comfort zone, so to speak. It need to include toys and something soft to lay on. It will also protect your puppy from harm until they learn a little more about their new environment. It is a great place for your puppy to sleep until you are certain that they are potty trained. A new companion needs to be a good experience for everyone and accidents in your home are not pleasant.
Chew toys are a must! Puppies are going to chew. It is important to take care that whatever type of toy you choose isn’t something that your puppy can chew up and swallow or get choaked on. The ropes with knots in them and Nylabones two of our favorites. Soft, plastic toys are easily chewed up and swallowed and can cause your new baby serious problems.
The main thing to remember is that new puppies are a big commitment. They thrive on love and affection and do require a lot of care but the rewards are tremendous!! If you have never owned a Bully, there is no way to tell you what a wonderful experience you are about to encounter. Once you have had one, you will never be without!!
